Jerry Reichart
Cave Explorer Instructor

Jerry Reichart, one of the founders of Sipadan Scuba, is a PADI Course Director and one of Asia’s few fully qualified ANDI Level 4 Cave Explorer Instructors. Full cave training qualifies an individual to do dives to caves as deep as 50m using 3 different gas mixtures involving multi-gas switches for decompression. Full Oxygen and decompression tracking, dive planning, emergency protocol, equipment handling, and stress management skills are all part of this course.

Jerry has logged well over 1000 cave dives to the “Turtle Tomb” and he has pushed through to the furthest corners of the cave system. Without a doubt Jerry is currently the most qualified and capable instructor to take divers there. He conducts cave diver training on a regular basis and he has certified well over 100 divers from entry level Cavern Diver to Full Cave Diver and Instructor.

The Turtle Cave at Sipadan Island is one of the most beautiful coral caves that can be found in Asia. Unlike at limestone caves no stalagmites have formed here but the colors at the walls do indicate different water levels over time. The white sandy bottom and bright colored ceiling enhance rather than absorb the light of the torches. The shelfs are home to the caves occupants, most notably flashlight fish, moray eels, spiny cave lobster, shrimp and large snapper that often take advantage of a divers light to get their prey. The skeletons of a dolphin and a marlin can be found on shelfs, and an air pocket allows to talk to another before a narrow passageway leads to the actual tomb where so many turtles have found their last resting place.

In digging into the life of Chris Simanjuntak, he is not only a prolific shooter, but a musician, an athlete, a restorer of classic cars, and, well, a dog lover. Combining an outward expression of being a man’s man with an apparently inward sensitivity towards elegance, grace, and emotion that he reveals through his work, Chris is most certainly a delightfully enigmatic underwater photographer.

In 2004, he became a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer followed by an SSI Advanced Instructor rating, and have certified hundreds of divers ever since, equipped him more with the ability to cope and handle difficulties in the water, which later contributes to his line of commercial underwater works. About five years ago, Chris left his “before underwater photographer” life of working in hospitality in Jakarta, and moved to Bali in order to be in the heart of the Indonesian diving action. Since he committed to photography full time, much of his work has included commercial and underwater production for print ads and television commercials. But in both his personal and commercial work, there is an apparent awareness of conceptualism, a profound expression of human beauty, and at times, an ethereal quality blended within his surreal landscapes.

And as an example of someone who took a leap of making his passion his profession, his appreciation for his craft percolates through his photographs, revealing a body of images that draw the audience in to the world as he views it through his lens.
